Call Me Mandy is a period novel set in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century. The story moves between two perspectives: the voice of a young girl, present only for a brief moment, and the reflective voice of the same woman in her nineties. Through these shifts, the narrative weaves together music, tenderness, pain, and the atmosphere of a bygone era.

The design of the publication draws directly from the visual language of the time in which the story unfolds. Material choices, printing techniques, and typographic details were selected to evoke the texture of mid-century print culture.

We worked with a restrained, period-appropriate palette. Subtle irregularities in typesetting, shifts in rhythm, and deliberate typographic “crescendos” reference the musical structure present throughout the text. The layout balances calmness with moments of visual emphasis, echoing the novel’s interplay between memory, emotion, and sound.
